“Why not?”

“Apart from you and your partner, Lorna is the only living person who knows about this, and she doesn’t like me to use my gift on her.”

“You’ve never told anyone else?”

“My dad knew. But he’s gone.”

“What about your mom?”

Kahrren shook her head. “I never knew her. She died when I was a baby.” Shifting back to her task, she directed, “Okay, think of something no one knows.” He took a minute to think, then nodded.

She reached behind him and placed her hand at the base of his skull. She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply, as she did when centering herself for a massage. He automatically followed. She took a moment, then removed her hand and opened her eyes.
